The Celtic League is pleased at the news of the release of Breton political activist and prisoner, Kristian Georgeault, from prison on the 7th November.

At the last general Assembly of the League in Landerne/Landerneau in Breizh/Brittany in August 2006, the following resolution was passed:

'This AGM calls for the immediate release of Kristian Georgeault, given the fact that he has been tried twice for the same crime (on March 26 th 2004 and June 29th 2005) and taking into consideration the time already served.'

Georgeault's release has been campaigned for by the League since his incarceration by the French authorities in 2000, for his alleged involvement in the l'Armée Révolutionnaire Bretonne.

On 26th March 2004 Geogeault, among others, was tried in Paris in a court that was specially set up for the purpose. At this court Geogeault was sentenced to 11 years imprisonment. However, Geogeault was then later put on trial again on 29th June 2005 in Breizh/Brittany and was there sentenced to 6 years imprisonment.

In August 2006 the League wrote to Mr Pascal CLÉMENT, Ministère de la Justice stating that Georgeault had been put on trial twice for the same crime – not allowed under French law – and consequently would have otherwise been released at an earlier date.

Georgeault has been released on conditional bail which restricts his involvement in political activity. The restrictions could be a breach of United Nations principles governing an individuals civil and political rights.
