In an astonishing volte-face the British Ministry of Defence (MOD) have finally admitted that the RAF Nimrod aircraft which crashed in Afghanistan was `unairworthy'

The admission by Lawyers acting for the MOD in a High Court action brought by relatives of the deceased crew comes three months after the MOD insisted the aircraft were airworthy.

Last month they insisted the aircraft was still airworthy and safe to operate whilst modifications were made although it is understood that the type has now been replaced on surveillance duties in support of NATO occupation forces in Afghanistan.

Nimrods operate extensively over the Celtic countries and periodically use the airfield on the Isle of Man for training purposes.

In July last year the Isle of Man Chief Minister responding to concerns from the Celtic League about the Nimrod operations at the Isle of Man Airport said:

"I believe that the Ministry of Defence…would not knowingly fly aircraft which are not air worthy."

The most recent admission calls into question the veracity of that statement.
