NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE There has been a further exchange between the Celtic League and the Department of Defence in Ireland concerning the recruitment of young people from Ireland into the British Army (see link). We have concluded the correspondence by reminding the Department that we will monitor the situation and highlight any cases of abuse of young recruits which come to light (see below): ?Dear Mr Lowe, Thank your for your response and please accept that I am aware you are probably extremely busy with all manner of business so the time scale for replying is perfectly adequate. I was not expecting further elaboration on what you had already said simply for the Department revisit the matter. I note you will pass the correspondence to Minister Coveney and hope he will reconsider the issue. At the end of the day it is for the Irish government and State to make the decisions it sees fit in relation to young people and British Army recruitment.. I do hope that whatever decision is arrived at is prudent and wise one. I would not want Irish families to go through the anguish that families from Scotland and Wales have gone through in terms of the still unresolved deaths of young recruits at the (now closed) Deepcut barracks. For our part the Celtic League will continue to monitor these matters and we will draw any new information to your attention. We will of course also publicise the fact that we issued warnings about this issue if anything untoward involving young recruits from the Irish republic does occur. Once again thank you for taking the time to respond, Yours sincerely, J B Moffatt DOI Celtic League? —— ?19 May 2015 Mr. Bernard Moffatt Director of Information Celtic League Dear Mr. Moffatt I wish to acknowledge receipt of your e-mail correspondence of 29 April 2015 and would like to apologise for the delayed reply. I have made further enquiries in the Department with regard to this matter and unfortunately it is not possible to give you any more detailed response than that which has already issued. The contents of your correspondence have been noted and will be brought to the attention of the Minister for Defence, Mr. Simon Coveney T.D., at the earliest opportunity.
