The Irish President Michael D Higgins has called at the Cuban Embassy in Dublin and signed the book of condolences.

Mr Higgins, accompanied by his wife Sabina Coyne-Higgins, arrived at the Cuban Embassy off Pearse Street at 9am this morning.

They were greeted by the Cuban ambassador to Ireland Dr Hermes Herrera Hernandez.

The Cuban ambassador Dr Hernandez said the statement from President Higgins had been very important and it was also an honour that he should be the first to sign the book of condolence.

?I appreciate very much the position of the President in relation to our situation and our sadness,? he said.

Yesterday President Higgins issued a statement saying that Fidel Castro was a ?giant among global leaders? (link):
