The Celtic League has written to the Chinese government to protest against ongoing repression in Tibet. The move comes as there are reports of a particularly vicious crackdown by Chinese security forces against ethnic Tibetans. Many people including some monks are reported killed as, despite Chinese assertions to the contrary, it becomes apparent that paramilitary police and troops are firing on demonstrators.

Celtic League General Secretary, Rhisiart Tal-e-bot, has urged "China to respond in a more civilised way towards those who do not agree with its policy of assimilation and political repression" (See below).

"Madam Fu Ying Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to the United Kingdom 49-51 Portland Place London W1B 1JL England

Dear Madam Fu Ying

Chinese reaction to demonstrations in Tibet

Following the Chinese authorities reaction to the escalating demonstrations in Tibet and the surrounding provinces, we feel compelled to express our deep concern regarding the heavy handed way the military and police have dealt with protesters.

It does indeed seem to us in the west that the Chinese authorities are pursuing a vindictive and violent policy towards those who only want to uphold and promote their political and cultural freedom. In response to this the Celtic League is calling on its members and supporters from across the world, who are thinking or planning to make the trip to China, to boycott The Games out of solidarity with the Tibetan people.

We have copied this letter to the International Olympic Committee who we have also lobbied to impose an appropriate boycott on The Games being held in Beijing this year, in view of the atrocities that continue to be committed. With the attention of the international community and media focused on China over the next few months, the world will be looking for a peaceful resolution to this conflict and for China to respond in a more civilised way towards those who do not agree with its policy of assimilation and political repression.

Yours sincerely

Rhisiart Tal-e-bot General Secretary Celtic League
